The National Road Safety Strategy (NRSS) 2011–2020 was the third national road safety strategy, following strategies covering 1992-2000 and 2001-2010, and has been superseded by the current 2021-2030 strategy.
The 2011-2020 strategy was based on Safe System principles and was framed by the guiding vision that no person should be killed or seriously injured on Australia’s roads. As a step towards this long-term vision, the strategy presented a 10-year plan to reduce the annual numbers of both deaths and serious injuries on Australian roads by at least 30%. These targets were ambitious compared with the 23% reduction in road deaths achieved over the previous decade1.
